What is a Nonprofit Organization (registered with the IRS)?

close

A registered nonprofit organization (U.S. or foreign) is formally approved by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, has an EIN and is listed in the IRS Master Business File database.

If this best describes your organization, please use that selection when creating a Post.

The gold star on the Posts page indicates the nonprofit is registered with the IRS.

What is a Nonprofit Organization (unregistered)?

close

Certain organizations can claim nonprofit tax exempt status without receiving formal U.S. Internal Revenue Service approval, may or may not have an EIN, but are not listed in the IRS Master Business File database.

These might include:

  • religious organizations
  • public schools
  • state and local governmental organizations
  • Indian tribal organizations
  • organizations covered by group exemptions
  • some foreign nonprofit organizations

If one of these best describes your organization, please use this selection when creating a Post.

If donations to your organization are not tax deductible, please use the "Other type of not-for-profit" designation provided.

What is an Other Type of Not-For-Profit Organization?

close

Other types of not-for-profit organizations include:

Grassroots and community organizations, homeowners associations, incorporated or unincorporated organizations or any other type of organized not-for-profit groups, partnerships or initiatives that benefit others.

This is also the appropriate choice for foreign nonprofit organizations not registered with the IRS in the United States.

We hope to be able to better accommodate foreign nonprofits with registration in their own countries, in the future.  Thank you for your patience.

What is a For Profit Organization?
